It’s almost here. The month where writers turn into cranky, zombies. Their fingers weary and eyes heavy, from late nights and early mornings tapping away at the keyboard to reach those 1,667 words each day for the month of November, All in order to be crowned a NaNoWriMo winner!
What am I talking about? Well, November is National Novel Writing Month or NaNoWriMo for short, or just NaNo for really short. It’s a month where writers all over the world and in galaxies far, far, away, aim to write a novel (or the best part of) in 30 days. The prize? Simply the self-satisfaction of achieving 50,000 words written, and the honor of being able to display a NaNo Winner’s badge on their website/blog/Facebook. Or for if you’re really keen, I believe you can even order a t-shirt!
I’ve taken part in NaNoWriMo three times now. Each time I’ve been able to get a fair decent amount of words out, and in 2014 I managed to scrape over the 50k words mark and bask in the afterglow of winner’s glory. That manuscript is now heading into fourth draft as we speak.
This year, I’m not technically playing by the rules, but as all good NaNo-ers know, rules! schmules! We make our own. So this year I’m taking that fourth draft and going to attempt to wrestle it into submission by tackling an almost complete rewrite. It’s true, I will use some existing chapters/scenes, but for the most part it will be new words. Some might say that’s cheating, but really, the aim of the game for me with NaNo, is to simply get words down. Any words down by the end of the month, is a win for me, and if I can get close to 50,000 new words, I’ll be stoked (and probably shocked, but let’s see).
As with other years NaNo will take top priority for words for the month, which means I may not be able to spare any words here on the blog. But, it may also mean I have lots to share to clear my brain so the story can unfold each day. Who knows? I will be posting my progress on my Facebook, Twitter and Instagram if you’re, interested to follow the torturous experience. And I will let you all know how I fare for the month. Also don’t forget my newsletter which will be out next week with some NaNo tips for newbies. (If you scroll down, you’ll see my sign up box).
So, until then, wish me luck!!
