So I’m halfway through NaNoWriMo and the rewrite of manuscript two. From an outsider’s perspective it must look like I’m slaying it, as I sit at 35,775 words, but rewriting is so much easier than starting from scratch. I have the story, the plot, the characters and the setting all well developed, and I have the previous draft to work from. And that’s a huge advantage.
I’m taking it chapter by chapter and rewriting from scratch word for word, although I am using a few phrases and bits here and there from the previous draft (bonus!). From there I’m adding in scenes and chapters, fleshing it out along the way. So halfway along, I’m pretty confident I’ll get to 50,000 words, not so confident I’ll make the 70,000 – 80,000 words I’ve targeted, but hopefully I’ll be well on the way.
My novel is set both in the early 1990’s and the late 1990’s, 1992 and 1999 to be precise. The early 90s was the time I was finishing up my schooling years, and by the end of the decade I found truths and realities began to hit home – basically, I grew up. My characters are hitting the same timeline throughout the book, so it’s helpful to keep those feelings and emotions in mind as I write.
Why did I set it in the 1990s? Well, not only can I relate personally, but it was also a simpler time. In the early 90s there was of course no internet, no mobile phones, and no social media. And it fits the arc of the story to not have these mediums available.
When I think back to the early 1990s in particular, I can’t help but think of the movies, TV shows, and of course music that soundtracked the era. I’m loving heading back in time and reliving these things. Here are some of my favs from 1992:
Under The Bridge – Red Hot Chili Peppers
To Be With You – Mr. Big
November Rain – Guns n’ Roses
Let’s Get Rocked – Def Leppard
Thought I’d Died And Gone To Heaven – Brian Adams
Friday I’m In Love – The Cure
One – U2
Bohemian Raphsody – Queen (Thanks to the movie Wayne’s World)
Smells Like Teen Spirit – Nirvana
Sometimes Love Just Aint Enough – Patty Smyth
Life is a Highway – Tom Cochrane
Lethal Weapon 3
A League of their Own
A Few Good Men
Bram Stoker’s Dracula
Fresh Prince of Bel Air
Beverley Hills: 90210
Hey, Hey! It’s Saturday
Mad About You
The Wonder Years
Home & Away
The Golden Girls (last season)
The Cosby Show (last season)
South African Apartheid Referendum
Summer Olympics – Barcelona
Freddie Mercury Tribute AIDS benefit Concert Held
Bosnian War begins
Steffi Graf & Andre Agassi win Wimbledon Singles Finals
Bill Clinton elected President of the United States of America
I’ve already written a few of these into my narrative, but my goal in the next draft (after NaNoWriMo) is to weave in even more references to really cement the time and place for the reader. And, I’d love your help too. If you’re old enough to remember the early 1990s, I’d love to hear what you think of when you go back to that era? The music, the TV shows, the movies. What that period of your life you were at? What games do you remember playing? (Sonic the Hedgehog anyone?) What emotions you remember experiencing? Anything and everything! So, leave me a comment and you never know, I may use it in my book! (Don’t worry I won’t be using names, or personal references.)
Do you remember the 1990s?
