Improving as a writer

. As budding writers, we don’t often take the time to acknowledge that we are improving as a writer. But we should. Since submitting my first finished manuscript to publishers and playing the waiting game, I’ve been editing another manuscript I’ve had sitting in the bottom drawer (literally!) This was the first full novel I … Read more

What I learned from setting myself a deadline

My social media feeds are often filled with writers working to deadline. Pictures of messy desks, empty chocolate wrappers and countless cups of coffee, all constant companions when working to a deadline. Most of these authors have real deadlines, with real editors and real publishers. That’s what life is like in the real writing world. … Read more

The Calm Before The Storm

Today is the 31st of October, which means tomorrow is November 1. The beginning of NaNoWriMo. If you aren’t sure what I’m talking about you can read about it here, here and here. I do a lot of writing about it. Sorry.

So with today brings calm anticipation, a splash of butterflies, an unsettling fear and a huge wash of excitement. I’m ready. Just.

NaNo…. What the?

For those of you who don’t know, November is NAtional NOvel WRIting MOnth. NaNoWriMo as it is affectionately known is a global event where crazy writers such as myself, commit to the goal of writing 50,000 words on a project they are working on, usually fiction. I say crazy because to actually reach the 50k goal is no mean feat. It requires a minimum of 1,667 words for the 30 days of November and although that doesn’t sound like a lot, when you sit down and attempt to write that many words each day you realise it is so much harder than it sounds.

That high pitched squeal of excitement illuminating the hallway, as contagious as it was loud.

Hash tag: Am Editing

It has been eight weeks since I finished the first draft of my manuscript and stepped away to bask in the glory of reaching another minor goal on my writing journey. The feeling of elation and achievement was fulfilling to say the least and a part of me wanted to leave it all there. Finish. Done. No need to pursue further. But another part of me knew of course I wouldn’t!

It actually took me about two weeks to get the characters out of my consciousness. To stop thinking about the ‘what ifs‘ and the ‘I should haves‘, and for the six weeks I have tried really hard not to let the story seep back into my mind.

Treading water

Do you know what I’ve done today? Not a whole lot, that’s what. It’s even taken me most of the day to figure what to blog about. The problem being I just can’t think straight. Things have been busy around here lately, and although I’m not complaining I feel I have been rolling like a stone evolving into a ball of gigantic proportions. I wouldn’t’ really say I’m overwhelmed, just tired. It’s the coming down after a few weeks of highs.

When ideas strike

Last night as I was sitting quietly minding my own business lurking around social media and listening to husband snore on the couch next to me, something happened.

A little seed inside my brain began sprouting, the little shoot forcing it’s way out to drink in the sunlight ready to grow.
