Why I’m beaten but not beat

It’s only November 25th and I’m waving the white flag. I surrender to you NaNo. You beat me again. But I’m not beating myself up. I have 37,195 words towards a new project that I didn’t have twenty five days ago. A project that is far from perfect but definitely workable. So why am I beaten but not beat? In taking part in NaNoWriMo this year actually taught me a lot about myself as a writer and that can only be a good thing. So what did I learn?

The Calm Before The Storm

Today is the 31st of October, which means tomorrow is November 1. The beginning of NaNoWriMo. If you aren’t sure what I’m talking about you can read about it here, here and here. I do a lot of writing about it. Sorry.

NaNo…. What the?

For those of you who don’t know, November is NAtional NOvel WRIting MOnth. NaNoWriMo as it is affectionately known is a global event where crazy writers such as myself, commit to the goal of writing 50,000 words on a project they are working on, usually fiction. I say crazy because to actually reach the 50k goal is no mean feat. It requires a minimum of 1,667 words for the 30 days of November and although that doesn’t sound like a lot, when you sit down and attempt to write that many words each day you realise it is so much harder than it sounds.
