When you find what you love and have the opportunity to be able to do it, life doesn’t get much better. I read something the other day along the lines of “if you find yourself commenting on something often, thinking how you would have approached it or improved it – you have found your passion. That’s what you should be doing.
Writing is what I love doing. It’s by know means easy and doing it part time around ‘real’ work, parenting & family is certainly challenging but I couldn’t not. When I’m writing I am happy. It’s as simple as that.
Freelancing has some wonderful advantages too. Last week I was fortunate enough to be interviewing a high profile parenting expert. We chatted on the phone for almost half an hour and after hanging up, I realised how lucky I am. Reading magazines, newspapers and websites, researching articles and interviewing amazing experts in their fields is part of my job. Yes I know! How lucky am I to be continually learning and adding to my bucket of life experience both personally and professionally? Cool huh?
And it’s not only factual information. For me, being a writer is about sharing stories. Real life experiences, stories that leap off the page and touch the heart of the reader. Profiling intriguing people with everyday stories to tell is something I look forward to doing more of. Everyone has a story to tell and everyone has a story worth telling.
The best thing about all of the above is the knowledge that gets put in reserve that I can dip into when I’m writing fiction. Little tidbits of information from here, personal stories from there along with my own observations and experiences all melt together to create an endless pot to draw from.
I love what I do for so many reasons but mostly because it makes me happy. It fulfills me. And I fully believe that if your work can make you happy, you have found your passion and calling in life.
Does you work make you happy?
Have you found your calling?
