Author Mentoring

What is a writing mentor?

A writing mentor is someone, usually an author, who shares their experience, knowledge and support to help writers to continue to move forward with their writing.

What I do.

I assist writers achieve their writing goals through one on one mentoring sessions focusing on their personalised needs.

Who I help?

Fiction writers in the early stages of their career prior to securing a traditional agent or publisher.

Fiction writers who are pursuing independent publishing.

Emerging authors wanting support and accountability to keep moving forward in their author careers.

What does mentoring offer?

Mentoring is personalised and tailored to suit where you are in your author career and what your individual needs are.

Together we will assess where you are, your goals, and what obstacles and challenges you are facing. I will help you develop a plan and strategies to help you move forward with a positive mindset and practical advice.

Mentoring includes, but is not limited to, advice and support for the following (depending on your needs):

  • Goal setting

  • Productivity and accountability

  • Understanding your creative process and building on your strengths

  • Motivation and confidence building (aka how to shrug off self-doubt)

  • General advice and feedback on your writing

  • Developing the business skills you need as an author (including marketing and social media)

  • Understanding the publishing industry, paths to publications, things to be wary of, and how to take that next step

  • Advice on tools, apps, strategies to help with your writing.

Mentoring is for you if…

  • You want to pursue writing as a career

  • You lack the skills or motivation to be accountable (or think you do)

  • You lack an ally in your life who can help you stay motivated and help you with your writing

  • You are prepared to be proactive and take on board suggestions and feedback

  • You have a positive mindset and want to shake off imposter syndrome and self-doubt to be a more confident, competent, and productive writer

  • You have questions about writing and the industry that you’re not sure who to ask

  • You are hungry for knowledge and advice to help you be a better writer

Mentoring is not for you if…

  • You don’t have the time or lack the commitment to put in the work

  • You are looking for extensive developmental/structural editing of you work. While I offer general advice and feedback on some of your writing, editing and manuscript assessment is not part of my mentoring services. There are fully qualified and experienced editors out there who do this. (Please contact me and I can offer some suggestions if this is what you’re after.)

  • You are not serious about writing as a career

  • You don’t like to be challenged

Why me?

I have been writing since forever, but more seriously since 2009 and I have learned a lot about the craft and business of writing and publishing. I have both indie and traditionally published, and have written over ten manuscripts. I have studied the craft and business of writing extensively including with Fiona McIntosh, The Australian Writers’ Centre, and Curtis Brown Creative. I am passionate about giving back and helping writers be the best they can be and navigate the ups and downs of the industry. There’s nothing I love more than helping and seeing writers achieve their goals and readers getting books in their hands.
