do you have a hobby?I was listening to Carly & Kelly's podcast 'Straight & Curly' on the walk home from school, (as I do because I'm a podcast junkie), and they had an interesting conversation about hobbies. In particular, non-electronic hobbies.Hobbies are a funny thing don't you think? When I think of a hobby, I tend to think of things I liked doing as a kid. Or the things you tacked on at the end of your resume to give potential employers a rounded view of who you were as a person. (Do they even do that anymore??) It's also one of those words that if you keep saying it over and over, it just sounds weird. (I know you're doing that right now!)The actual definition of a hobby is (according to Google):hobby definition So I got to thinking about what my hobbies are, now, as an adult. And I came up with the following:

  • Reading - If only there was enough time in the day to read for hours on end!
  • Writing - Yes it's my job, and even if I wasn't aiming for publication I'd still write because I enjoy it.
  • Netball - I've been playing netball since I was 8, and I love everything about it.
  • Running - Never in a million years would I have ever thought I'd count running as a hobby. And technically I don't enjoy it, but I do get pleasure and satisfaction after the actual running bit. Knowing that it's keeping me fit, and I am improving my running times is a great motivator, and I think that's what I enjoy about it.
  • Walking - I walk every day. Whether it's walking the dogs, or walking the kids to school, or just walking to clear my head. There really is nothing better than getting out in the fresh air - with the added bonus of allowing me time to listen to music, or podcasts!
  • Collating family photos - I'm big on family photos. The kind you print out and put in albums. We have our albums in the lounge room and will often flick through for a trip down memory lane. I've been trying to convince myself to do a digital photo book for each year instead, but I can't bring myself to move away from the physical feeling of a photograph.
  • Spring cleaning - or Summer or Autumn or Winter. Or any damn time of the year. I don't really know if I'd call it a hobby, it's probably more an OCD thing. But I do get enjoyment out of getting things in tip top shape and having a big clean out of junk, unused or unwanted items. A hoarder I am not!

I found it interesting that most of my hobbies were in fact non-electronic. And if I could write with a pen as neatly and as quickly as I could type, then that would be too (but that ain't never gonna happen!)Also from doing this exercise of listing my hobbies, I gave myself a new found appreciation for the things I make room for in my life. As I do make room for all these things.  So I think that that in itself could be included in the definition of a hobby - things that you make room for in your life. Now, excuse me. It's time for my walk.

Do you have a hobby? And are they things you always make room for?
